Matthews was first trained by Carlo Cannon, who was trained by Lance Storm.
He signed with WWE in 2013, where he wrestled under the names Buddy Murphy and Murphy, winning the WWE Cruiserweight Championship, WWE NXT Tag Team Championship, and WWE RAW Tag Team Championship.
Matthews left WWE in 2021 and went on to wrestle for both NJPW and MLW.
He signed with AEW in 2022 and won the AEW World Trios Championship.
Outside of AEW, Matthews will wrestle at some indie shows and local shows in Australia for promotions such as Melbourne City Wrestling.
