Welcome to the very first edition of the PW Down Under Australian Wrestling News Wrap-up, where I will attempt to navigate the plethora of Australian wrestling promotions and those information super highways known as social media, to bring you a summary of the news on offer around the country, so you don’t have to! So without further ado, let us shoot around the country see what has been making news.
Let’s kick things off in New South Wales and Manly based hard rock act Big Red Fire Truck, who dropped their music video for track Psychotropic Thunder which features a who’s who of Pro Wrestling Australia (PWA) talent. The clip, filmed at Liberty Hall in Sydney amongst the chaos of an over-the-top rope Battle Royale features lead vocalist of the band Digby Robinson getting involved in the rumble action himself! A kudos to PWA, who have been working with local music acts quite regularly and these collaborations amongst two artforms is something I love to see.
Still on PWA and the Six Person Ladder match for a guaranteed championship shot at anytime and any place has now got five of it’s six participants – With Jess Troy, Ben Braxton, Big Brother Billy, Aaron Jake and Matt Boyton (FKA Mat Rogers) all announced to take part. They join an already solid card, featuring Unsocial Jordan defending his Soul of PWA championship for the first time against arguably the most opposite person he has ever stood across the ring from in The Tuckman and the always incredible Velocities battling the aptly named Joker and the Thief (Jimmy Townsend and Mick Moretti) for the PWA Tag Team Championship. The July 29 card titled ‘It’s Coming Home’ which will see each of PWA’s championships defended is coming together nicely and I can’t wait for the car to strengthen further as we near closer to the event.
Steph De Lander and Everett Connors have been announced to be in action on the GCW vs Renegades of Wrestling Tour, which will also feature the likes of El Hijo Del Vikingo, Maki Itoh, Joey Janela, Effy, Allie Katch and many more. This will be one of the most hotly anticipated wrestling events on the east coast of Australia for the remainder of this year. Melbourne City Wrestling’s next show at the Thornbury Theatre on Saturday September 9 titled Ascension is already selling very strongly, with Gold and Bronze seating allocations already exhausted. If you want to be there to witness all the repercussions of the Ballroom Brawl, best to get your tickets sooner rather than later.
Bobby Bishop and Rip Rielly have been announced as combatants in a semi final of Pro Wrestling League’s P1 Tournament at Project Revolution 4 on August 26. These two stalwarts of the Queensland Professional wrestling landscape will not battle in an ordinary match though, this will be contested as a last man standing match! Who will advance to the final and what will be the fallout that the victor may carry into the final against the winner of a match of former stablemates Tim Hayden and Solomun Blackwell?
Lucas Fantasia has the opportunity to put all of the talk of flukes to bed and earn The Hiit Squad a much coveted tag team championship match against arguably the greatest tag team currently wrestling in Australia in the Untouchables, provided Fantasia can do the almost inconceivable and defeat Damian Slater again on Saturday August 12 at EPW Hell or High Water. The other highly anticipated bout for this evening is the rematch between EPW champion the Don, defending the championship he holds against Taylor King, only this time the match will take place inside the confines of a steel cage!
Wrestle Rampage have announced a mouthwatering one night tournament on Saturday August 5th titled Conquest II, which will see eight of the very best professional wrestlers in Australia fight to not only win this tournament but claim the mantle of Australian National Champion as their bounty. It is a tournament that should not be missed, featuring current Australian National Champion Tommy Knight, Havok, DELTA, Ricky South, Solomun Blackwell, Punch Drunk Istria, Will Gibson and Corndog. You can be rest assured that a truly unforgettable night of professional wrestling will ensure.
TCW’s Winter Warfare card is starting to take shape with four matches officially announced for the promotion’s July 29 card. Aaron Lynch will battle JJ Storm, Brisbane Street Bullies will take on Gippsland Pro Wrestling’s Owen Steadman and Liam Lush, Allie Galvin will attempt to ascertain who Espanola is and and Sly Silver and Doomslayer will slog it out for not only bragging rights but for a shot at the North Esk Title.
The SLAM! Pro Wrestling League board of directors have gifted fans of Australian professional wrestling a phenomenal tag team contest at their next show on August 12 at the Woden Southern Cross Club, when the Natural Classics Tome and Stevie Filip, are challenged by newly formed take team Joker and the Thief and putting their nearing 300 day reign in serious jeopardy. This card will also feature a high stakes match between Frankie B and Lena Kross, Slex and Dan Archer will do battle and in the main event ‘The Hooligan’ Vinnie Bronson and ‘The Top Shelf Champ’ Mikey Broderick will face off against ‘The Bogan Warrior’ Crofty and ‘The Hope from the Top Rope’ Luke Watts. It’s fair to say SLAM! are bringing fire to the capital, getting some of the very best in the country to the territory and its fans, which is awesome to see.
Finally we visit the top end and Top End Wrestling specifically, who have announced three matches for their Saturday Night Fights IV Card on Saturday July 22nd in Yarrawonga, With Harry Starr vs Locky Phoenix, Barry Starr vs Il Magnifico and Jakc Matz vs Reaper all slated for the show that evening.
