Champions Downunder #10- Heating Up In Winter!

We made it to the 10th edition of this thing! Champions Downunder is a big task each fortnight, and I gotta give a shout-out to those around the scene who also try and document all the happenings in Aussie wrestling. Here, it’s all about the champions of Aus wres, and we have a lot of them! Let’s look at what’s been happening these past couple of weeks, as well as what’s coming up for the next couple.

New South Wales

What’s Happened?

  • At All-Star Wrestling’s Night To Remember 6 (June 14th), Jack Dullahan defeated Keegan Brettle in a Winner Take All match, both winning the All-Star Heavyweight Championship and retaining the Eastern States Championship.   • Also, Axe Massacre def. Jasmin Brettle in a brutal Hardcore Match to win the All-Star Women’s Championship.
  • At Integrity Wrestling’s Infinity (June 13th), Paris De Silva became the first ever Infinity Champion, winning a mini tournament comprised of EC Brownie, Aaron Jake and Jack J Bonza.
  • Also, a tag match of Integrity Heavyweight Champion Maxx Ramirez & Torture vs. Kai Drake and Luke Watts ended with Kai pinning the champ!
  • At Newy Pro Fight Knight 121 (June 7th), Newy Pro Heavyweight Champion Ben Braxton def. Jay Law.
  • Also, Middleweight Champion Leo Tempest def. Randy Red Dragon.

What’s Coming Up?

  • At PWA King of the Metro (June 27), CHEVS defends the PWA Heavyweight Championship against Kai Drake.
  • Also, Robbie Eagles will defend the Soul of PWA Championship against Michael Spencer.
  • At Rock N Roll Wrestling, Moses and Lee Morrow are set to battle for the vacant Rock N Roll Wrestling at an upcoming event, but we get an appetiser at the June 21st Academy show, as they face each other in non-title action.
  • At Newcastle Pro Wrestling’s Rumble In The Jungle on July 11, the two holders of the Invictus Gauntlets will go one-on-one as Tyson Reed takes on Rita Stone.

Australian Capital Territory

What’s Happened?

  • At SLAM Pro Wrestling League on May 31st, Dan Archer retained his SLAM Heavyweight Championship against Caveman Ugg in a No Disqualification match, following a superplex through a table. My sources can confirm it was not a Slim Jim sponsored table.
  • Also, Rita Stone def. Frankie B to retain the SLAM Women’s Championship following a 450 Splash.
  • At ICW Tag Warfare (June 7), Jackson Thornhill and UNIT outlasted Whiplex and Masks of Insanity to remain the ICW Tag Team Champions.
  • Also, the ICW World Heavyweight Championship match between Tank and Chris Stevens ended in a DQ after Whiplex interfered, so Tank is still champion.

What’s Coming Up?

  • Dan Archer’s next challenger for the SLAM Championship is the monstrous Tommy Knight on July 26.
  • On the same show, Rita Stone defends the SLAM Women’s Championship against the surging contender Maya Maddox.

Victoria

What’s Happened?

  • At MXW Let ‘Em Cook (May 31), Mike Kaos def. Max “Bushranger” Kelly to retain the MXW Ascend Championship.
  • Also, MJ Russo def. Terry Shaw to become the NEW MXW Carnage Champion
  • And finally, Ace Shack def. JXT to become the NEW MXW Upload Champion.

What’s Coming Up?

  • MCW holds their Ballroom Brawl event- heavy with championship implications- on the 5th of July
  • Alpha Pro is holding Alpha vs. Energy on June 21st

Queensland

What’s Happened?

  • QWA Dominance on June 7th saw a little hot potato action, as Trent O’Day & Sam Cannon captured QWA Tag Team Championship gold from Tim Hayden & Whiplash in the VIP pre-show match, only to lose the titles straight back to them in a rematch on the main show.
  • Also, in the main event, Seth Tylors def. Dick Riggs to win the Queensland Wrestling Alliance Championship.
  • At UPW Fight For Life 8, UPW Heavyweight Champion Thirteen def. EC Diamond.
  • Also, Axe Massacre def. Lil Marz to retain the UPW Women’s Championship

What’s Coming Up?

  • At UPW in Fortitude Valley on June 28th, one half of the UPW Tag Team Championship, BK Calloway is in singles action against EC Diamond.
  • UPW also has their major Over The Top 8 event scheduled for July 18. It will feature a 30 Man Rumble and all UPW champions feature prominently on the poster.

South Australia

What’s Happened?

  • At Riot City Wrestling’s Key To The City on May 31st, Chris Basso retained the RCW Grand Championship against ACW Heavyweight Champion Downunder by embodying the strange persona of MIMIC.
  • Also, the Armstrongs def. Cadie Tre and SWAT to retain the RCW Tag Team Championship
  • The RCW Emerald Crown holder Zak Sabbath def. Red Smash
  • And in the titular ladder match, Dean Brady walked out of the event with the Key To The City.

What’s Coming Up?

  • In what is being billed as “the most highly anticipated event” in RCW history, RCW 300 is set for July 11. Matt Hayter returns to face Chris Basso for the RCW Grand Championship.
  • At PWSA Superslam on July 5th, the PWSA Champion Blarzay defends against Magni Ragnarsson.
  • Also, Brett Santirini defends the Adelaide Open Championship against Bob. If Santirini leaves Superslam as champion, Bob must retire.
  • ACW Collision Course is set for June 28th. In championship action, Zak Sabbath challenges the ACW Evolve Champion, KIT.

Western Australia

What’s Coming Up?

  • At EPW Evolution (July 5th), Marcius Pitt defends the EPW title against James Hartness & Hayden Zenith in a triple threat ladder match!
  • Also, Rogan Karguis defends the EPW Coastal Championship against an “OG” of the promotion, the returning Havoc!
  • Adding to the loaded EPW line-up, ATO (Julian Ward & Kaz Jordan) defend the EPW Tag Team Championship against the Purveyors of Workrate (CJL & Elijah Henry).
  • At STW Destined For Victory, June 21st, Rogan Karguis challenges the Great George Milanko for the STW Heavyweight Championship.
  • Also, Gorgeous Garry defends the Southern Cross Championship against The Don.
  • In addition, ATO challenge Bad Blood for the STW Tag Team Championship
  • Aaron O’Malley has challenged Korvus to an AOF Championship match for June 21st- Guardians of Wrestling.

    1. Typically we do cover Tasmania, it was an accidental oversight in this edition. Next week’s edition will cover the results of the TCW show last night.
