WWE acquires AAA ahead of WrestleMania 41

It’s WrestleMania season and usually that means anything can happen. Well, this year things did happen as during the Countdown to WrestleMania event, Michael Cole who has been a part of WWE for 28 years announced that WWE had acquired Mexican wrestling promotion AAA.
AAA formed in 1992 when Antonio Pena would break away from the company CMLL and would become the main rival promotion in Mexico. AAA has developed a reputation for outlandish gimmicks and characters. In addition to the conventional “squared circle”, the promotion occasionally uses a hexagonal wrestling ring. The promotion also has ties with other American based promotions such as TNA, MLW and even AEW.
AAA has been a promotion that has helped to change the shape the foundation of Luchador style with names such as Konnan, Rey Mysterio Jr, Eddie Guerrero, La Parka, Juventud Guerrera and Kenny Omega gracing the ring at one time or another.
While WWE has previously had a working relationship in the 90’s with AAA, this news came as a surprise to many who were in attendance for the announcement.
There has been varied discourse online about the purchase of AAA, especially since the current AAA Mega Champion is Alberto El Patron and is someone who WWE had previously cut ties with especially due to the controversary situations that have surrounded him in the past.
WWE also announced as a part of the acquirement, AAA and NXT will be hosting When Worlds Collide on June 7th at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.
